Public Water System Emergency Response Plan Handbook

The Drinking Water Program has posted water system security protocols and top ten security measures below. These protocols, along with the top ten list, are available as part of the State of Maine Drinking Water Program's efforts to assist and educate public water systems in Maine. These resources provide basic security procedures and protocols in order to strengthen and protect the nation’s public drinking water infrastructure. Please integrate the protocols as part of the individual water system's security measures and emergency response plans.

A number of water systems have asked for information on security products for hardening their systems. EPA maintains a website that gives some basic information on security products appropriate for water systems: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/security/guide/index.html.

If there are any questions or concerns, please call Bill Johnson at (207) 287-5678 or e-mail him at william.johnson@maine.gov.

The Environmental Protection Agency occasionally hires contractors to perform security-related work that may require directly contacting public water systems. If the Drinking Water Program is aware of legitimate contractors conducting research or fraudulent requests for information, we will provide notice on this webpage and/or provide a broadcast public notice.

If you are contacted by someone seeking security related information and you are unsure of the legitimacy of the request, please contact the Drinking Water Program Security Coordinator at (207) 287-5768 or the DWP main phone line at (207) 287-2070.
